A roof. Four walls. Shelter from the rain and wind. A safe place. A place to belong.
Most of us take for granted the places where we live – houses, apartments, condos – places
where we are secure and comfortable. Most of us don’t consider what it is like to be homeless or to be at risk of being homeless. Most of us don’t struggle with addictions or the lure of the streets and crime.
We also have support networks in place when we need help.
Winnipeg Inner City Missions (WICM) opened an exciting building project to provide a place of
hope and belonging for a group of inner city people, most of whom are Aboriginal. It is called
Anishinabe Place of Hope. The Ojibwe would say Endaayaang which means “Our home It embraces you. You belong there.”
The building provides 20 transitional units for mainly
Aboriginal people between the ages of 30 and 55 who have made a commitment to change the direction of their lives and have already completed a treatment program. Anishinabe Place of Hope is a haven for single adults. It provides safe, clean housing combined with advocacy, counselling and
referral.
These supports help residents achieve wholesome and productive lifestyles and
develop skills leading to employment.
Your continued support and contribution to Anishinabe Place of Hope is always welcome!
